As "Frank Lloyd Wright Fall," approaches, architecture fans can plan their visit to the Laurel Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Kentuck Knob, Fallingwater, and Polymath Park are the perfect itinerary for Frank Lloyd Wright fans traveling to Pennsylvania.
Fallingwater being one of Wright's most iconic design atop a waterfall, integrated into the landscape. Polymath Park is a collection of Usonian properties; two designed by Wright apprentice Peter Berndston and two Frank Lloyd Wright houses that were moved from different states and reconstructed on the Polymath Park property. Kentuck Knob (our favorite) is a grand, custom-designed Usonian style Frank Lloyd Wright house for the Hagans.
The In-Depth Tour is a perfect slower pace, and detailed 90 minute tour of Kentuck Knob. Additional time allows for more discussions and questions from Frank Lloyd Wright fans. The interactions between Wright and the Hagans can be further discussed, as well as Herman Keys (the contractor), the Wilsons (stone masons), and the Frank Lloyd Wright apprentices that were involved.
Tour guides will discuss what restoration efforts have been done over the years. The In-Depth Tour takes visitors into Mrs. Hagans "art studio," an area off the carport that is built into the hillside. The space was primarily used as a storage for equipment and outdoor furniture. Peter Palumbo, the current owner of Kentuck Knob, has a collection of artifacts and architectural drawings in the space. The In-Depth also goes into the basement, an area that is not typically included in Frank Lloyd Wright designs. The finished panty space in the basement showcases Wright's agreeable nature with Mrs. Hagan to provide as much storage as possible in the isolated area of the mountains. A utility room is attached to pantry space in the basement, showcasing electric, heating systems, and laundry.
